Shel Silverstein

A few weeks ago Miss E confessed to feeling a little discouraged about the poetry she has been working on in school. We talked a lot about what poetry is and how different types of poems come together. And then I ran upstairs to dust off my childhood copies of Shel Silverstein’s ‘Where the Sidewalk Ends’ and ‘A Light in the Attic’. We read our favorites and looked at the silly line drawings on each page. It lightened the mood a lot and helped her to realize that poetry doesn’t always have to be serious.

Her favorite poem was Band Aids and mine was The Babysitter. I’m pretty sure I can still recite that one by heart, without looking.
