Tikki Tikki Tembo

Throwing it way back today with this book. To think that this title has been around for over three decades makes me feel a smidge old. I remember reading it in first grade and feeling so proud about easily memorizing the names of the boys. When I read this to my littles I still love spouting off the name; “Tikki tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi pit-peri pembo” as fast as I can. The basic color illustrations also bring me right back to my childhood, when almost all the story books looked like this. Although it may be just an ancient Chinese folk tale, it carries a valuable lesson on equality and fairness.

What beloved picture books do you remember from childhood?

Tikki Tikki Tembo, retold by Arlene Mosel, illustrated by Blair Lent.
